My visit to Changguangxi Park
朱欣怡(高中直升2班)

We went to Changguangxi Park for a visit two weeks ago. The scenery there has left a deep impression on me.
It was a nice day. The sun was shining brightly and the air was clean and fresh. Upon our arrival, we met with numerous green plants and beautiful trees of all kinds. There were so many beautiful flowers there that I could hardly name them. We sat on the big green lawn, some singing, others talking excitedly. Half an hour had passed by but none of us wanted to leave the soft beautiful lawn. Though someone said we were too tired from studying hard to leave the place, I would rather say that it was because of the attractive scenery. We also enjoyed the food and fruit we had brought with us on the lawn. What a happy scene! The wind was warm, the air was refreshing and the laughter were contagious.
The scenery was so attractive that we could hardly take our eyes away from it. We were all lost in such a natural wonder. At long last we had to leave the place reluctantly. On our way back, we were still absorbed in our excitement. Everyone seemed happy and content to have come to this wonderful park and wanted to visit it again in the near future.

Teacher’s comments:
The writer goes directly to the topic by mentioning who, when, where and what. She follows these elements by vividly describing the beauty of the park and how the students were absorbed in the scenery. She uses so many beautiful words in the writing that it seems to have been written by the teacher. In actual fact, the teacher has only made only a little improvement and modification of the article. Zhu Xinyi can refer to the dictionary to find necessary elements for her writing, which I should recommend to the students of English.

A letter to Mr. Wu A letter to Mr. Wu
朱欣怡(高中直升2班)

Dear Mr. Wu,
Thank you for teaching me English and choosing me as your assistant. In fact, my English is not satisfying and most of my classmates learn English much better than me. Last year, when I was in Grade 8, I always came out last in the English exams. My English teacher therefore felt very much disappointed about me. In order to improve my English, I worked very hard and the situation changed for a little better after I entered Grade 9. But my English was still no better than others’.
When I entered the present class and had my first English lesson, I was very nervous. But to my surprise, you chose me as your assistant. It was at that moment that I made a big decision---I wanted to and must learn English well because I didn’t want to make you, a kind and wise teacher, feel disappointed in me. After I went back home, I told my parents about the matter. On hearing the news, they felt grateful and at the same time encouraged me to learn English well.
As time goes by, you’ve already taught me for one and a half months, during which time you’ve praised me seven times and this has given me confidence in learning English well. At the end of this month, we will have our mid-term examination, the first important examination since we entered the class. My class teacher has said that she will choose teachers’ assistants according to the scores we will get in the exams. I’m afraid that this time I will not make it because of my poor English, but no matter what happens, I’ll keep on learning English well because I’ve already made much progress in English under Mr. Wu’s instruction. I’m proud of my English teacher, the only English professor in Wuxi city. I’ll try my best to make you take pride in me one day.
Thank you for choosing me as your assistant. I really hope you can keep healthy. Though you’re in your early sixties, you look young and energetic. We all hope that you will be our teacher forever. You were, are and always will be my teacher. We will respect your for your rich knowledge all our lives.

Love,
Li Xinran

Teacher’s comments:
The writer begins her letter by thanking the teacher for choosing her as assistant, which made her excited and determined to learn English well as a token of her gratitude. She also feels worried because after the mid-term exam, all teachers’ assistants will be selected according to the students’ scores and she might lose her present post. Nevertheless, she has expressed her determination to learn English well whatever may happen to her.
The writer’s emotion is vividly expressed and her determination firmly made. I especially appreciate her changing my former student’s sentence “I was, am and will always be your pupil” into the one at the end of the letter. What a smart and flexible student!
